Selling through marketplaces
When someone asks an AI which headset to buy, does it name you or the marketplace?
We measured the buying questions that matter to sellers who live inside a marketplace. The result contradicts what almost every seller assumes, and it is the best news in the series: nobody owns this answer yet.
The state of the niche
Measured by Citorial in
Who really owns page one
We measured the page-one positions for this market’s real buying questions. Twenty-five positions in total. The expectation was to find the big platforms taking nearly all of them. That is not what came back: twenty-two different domains split those twenty-five positions, and none of them appeared more than three times.

Thirteen of the twenty-five positions are stores with a site of their own, and several of them are small. The platforms took six. The domain that appeared most often sells nothing at all: it is a forum, where ordinary people answer each other about where to buy. That is the material an assistant builds your customer’s answer from.
And the platforms are less ready than they look
We put the sites of the five largest platforms through the two basic automated-reading checks we run. Two passed both. One of them did not return the page content to an automated reader at all.
That matters for a reason sellers rarely think about: while you sell inside the platform, the one with a page, an address and a description in that answer is the platform, not you. Your brand shows up as a line inside its listing, when it shows up. If the platform itself is only halfway readable, the odds of your brand surviving that summary are smaller still.
The other half of the measurement is what changes the game. Because no domain owns this page one, there is no established incumbent to unseat. The space is open, and whoever organises their own presence first takes a position that today belongs to nobody.
What this means in practice
Selling well on the platform does not build your brand
Your reputation, your reviews and your sales history live inside the platform and never leave it. When someone asks an AI assistant where to buy that product, none of it is read: what gets read is the listing page, which describes the product and the platform, and rarely says who you are.
The answer is being assembled from forums and press
Six of the twenty-five positions we measured are a forum, tech press and a social network. People commenting, comparing and recommending. That is the material the assistant builds the answer from, and it is the kind of source where your brand is either named or does not exist.
The field is open, and that has a deadline
Twenty-two domains splitting twenty-five positions is the picture of a market with no owner. In none of the other ten niches we measured was page one this fragmented. Markets like this tend to consolidate, and whoever arrives organised before that is who stays.

Questions from people selling on marketplaces
- I only sell inside Mercado Livre and Shopee. Does this apply to me?
- It does, and yours is the most critical case. A seller who exists only inside the platform has no page of their own for the assistant to read, so everything it knows about your brand comes from the listing, which was written for the platform’s own search box, not to answer the question of someone deciding what to buy. The first step is to see what it answers about you today. The silence tends to be informative.
- If nobody owns page one, does the problem not solve itself?
- The fragmentation is the opportunity, not the solution. It means no brand has yet built a presence clear enough to become the default answer. That changes the moment somebody does. In every other market we measured there was already a domain showing up in three or four of the questions, and taking ground back from an incumbent costs far more than occupying an empty space.
- My product is the same one ten competitors sell. How do I stand out?
- With what only you know about it. Who uses it, what for, what usually goes wrong, what it is compatible with, the real delivery time. That is exactly the kind of content that put small stores on page one of the questions we ran, next to the big platforms. Everyone has the manufacturer spec sheet; nobody else has the experience of the person selling it.
- Do I have to leave the platform and build my own store?
- No. Keep selling where you sell. The platform handles payment, logistics and traffic, and there is no reason for that to change. What is missing is for your brand to exist outside it too, in a readable form, so the assistant’s answer names you and not just the generic product. The two coexist, and it is the second one that is missing.
