Fashion & apparel
They asked an AI which Brazilian clothing brands are best. Not one brand answered.
We measured the largest niche in Brazilian retail. On a question that asks for brands by name, the five results were a blog, a magazine, Instagram, YouTube and a luxury marketplace. Not a single brand site.
The size and the state of the niche
Measured by Citorial in
Where brands show up, and where they do not
We measured the page-one positions for this niche’s real buying questions. Seventeen distinct domains came back. Four were brand sites, and all four on the same theme: the most specific of them.

Look at the Brazilian brands theme. It asks for brands by name, and the five results were a streetwear blog, a fashion magazine, an Instagram post, a YouTube video and a luxury marketplace. The question was about brands. Everyone answered it except them.
The leaders’ sites are not the problem
We tested the sites of the five largest fashion chains in the country. Three passed both of the basic automated-reading tests we ran. In fashion, the site is not the bottleneck. What is missing is content, not infrastructure.
That changes the diagnosis. When the gap is technical, the fix is the site. When the site is up and the brand is still out of the answer, what is missing is someone on the brand’s side having written the page that answers the customer’s question.
Which is why the space here belongs to whoever publishes, not to whoever has the most stores. A blog and a video are holding the position a brand with a million-real media budget left empty.
What this means in practice
The "best brands" list is not yours
Whoever wrote the text the AI reads chose who is in it and in what order. If your brand is not in that text, it is not in the answer, and no media campaign puts you there, because that text is not selling paid placement.
The multi-brand retailer sells you, but tells its own story
Retailers and shopping clubs showed up repeatedly. They sell your garment, and it is their page the AI reads, with the discount up front and your competitor in the next column.

Questions from people who sell fashion
- My brand lives on Instagram. Is that not where fashion happens?
- It is one of the places, and the measurement confirms it: Instagram made page one. But it made it with a third party’s post about Brazilian brands, not with any brand’s own profile. Social delivers reach; the AI answer is still assembled from texts that explain who is who, and those live elsewhere.
- I sell on marketplaces and I do well. Do I need this?
- If you sell well there, the demand exists and somebody is capturing the part of it that asks before buying. The difference is whose customer it is at the end: on a marketplace they buy your garment and go back to the marketplace; named directly, they come back to you.
- Fashion changes every season. Does this not go stale fast?
- Collections change; the brand does not. What AI needs to know about you is what holds: who you make for, what sets you apart, where to buy, what people say. It is the layer almost nobody writes because it feels too obvious, and it is exactly the one missing from the answers.
- We are a small brand up against national chains.
- In the measurement, three of the four brands that appeared are not national chains. They appeared on the most specific of the themes we measured. Specificity is what buys space here, and it does not cost what a chain costs.
