Food retail & supermarkets
They asked an AI which supermarket is worth it. A forum answered.
We measured Brazilian food retail. Across the buying themes we measured, no supermarket appeared as often as a forum thread, and two more positions were app-store listings. Five of twenty page-one positions sit on pages no chain controls.

Who is answering for your sector
We measured the page-one positions for this niche’s real buying questions. The most frequent domain was not a chain: it was a forum, on most of the themes we measured. Two more positions were app-store listings.

Five of the twenty positions are a forum and app stores, pages written by customers or by platforms, where no chain edits a line. When an AI assistant builds its answer, the customer’s comment is what it reads first, not the chain’s corporate page.
And technical preparation is among the weakest we measured
We tested the sites of the five largest food retailers in the country. Only one passed both basic automated-reading tests, and it was not one of the national chains. Two did not return their site content to an automated reader at all.
This is a sector that invested heavily in apps and delivery logistics, and almost nothing in being understood by whoever reads the site without clicking. The result is what the measurement shows: the app store makes page one, and the chain’s site does not.
The one that passed both tests is a regional chain. That sums the niche up: smaller and organized is better placed right now than large and scattered.
What this means in practice
Customers describe your chain better than you do
The forum thread on page one was written by shoppers comparing service, price and delivery. It is rich, honest, current text, and it is the source the assistant prefers, because it answers exactly what was asked.
The app store became your sales page
Two positions were app listings. There, what describes your service is the store’s own template, filled with copy you wrote two years ago and never revisited.

Questions from people in food retail
- We are a regional chain; customers already know where we are.
- Existing customers do. The question the measurement captured comes from people who are not yet customers: they moved, they want delivery, they want to know which cash & carry is worth it. At that moment they read what third parties wrote, and the regional chains that appeared were precisely the ones with that information available.
- Our investment is in the app. Is that not enough?
- The app solves repeat purchase; it does not solve discovery. The app-store listing did make page one, which confirms it gets read, but it describes features, not the chain. Someone asking "which supermarket is worth it" finds no answer in an app listing.
- People are complaining about us on a forum. Can that be removed?
- No, and that is not what we do. What can be done is what works: publish clear, verifiable information on your side so the assistant has more than one source when it builds the answer. An isolated complaint weighs a lot when it is the only thing written about you.
- Supermarket margins are thin. Does this pay off?
- Fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends what one extra visit is worth to you. The free check exists for that, you see the size of the problem before deciding whether it is worth an investment.
