Site ready, brand invisible: what footwear reveals

The best technical result we measured in any sector sits next to the lowest brand presence on page one. The two facts together explain a lot.

Two numbers from the same sector

Measuring ten Brazilian markets, footwear produced the most uncomfortable pair of results of all.

First: the five largest footwear brands in the country passed both basic automated-reading tests we ran. Five out of five. It is the best technical result we found in any sector, and not by a small margin: in cosmetics, only one of the five leaders passed both.

Second: of the 20 page-one positions we read across the sector, exactly one belonged to a footwear brand. The other 19 were multi-brand retailers, outlets and list sites.

Site in order. Brand absent. At the same time.

Why this breaks the most common explanation

When a brand does not show up in AI answers, the standard diagnosis is technical. Crawlers cannot read the site, structured data is missing, content is trapped behind JavaScript. It is a comfortable diagnosis because it has a known fix and a vendor to sell it.

Footwear shows that diagnosis is incomplete. The sector's brands put their house in order and stayed out of the conversation anyway.

The reason is that the two tests measure different things. Passing means a machine can read your site. It does not mean what is written there works as an answer to the question somebody asked.

What was written on the pages that won

Two of the themes we measured in the sector asked for brands by name.

What answered were multi-brand retailers and a review site. These are pages whose business is precisely comparing several brands, and which therefore write about the category, not about themselves.

A footwear brand's own page talks about its positioning, its history, its collection. It is well written and it does not answer "which are the best brands", because that question asks for a comparison a brand will not make about itself.

The pattern repeats in other sectors

This is not a footwear quirk.

In furniture, the brands theme returned five ranking articles and no brands, and two of those lists were hosted on retailers' own sites. In fashion, the same theme returned a blog, a magazine, Instagram, YouTube and a marketplace. In software, almost all of page one was a ranking article on a competing vendor's blog.

Always the same mechanic: whoever wrote about the category kept the category.

What this changes

The expensive part may already be done. If your site passes the technical tests, the next investment is probably not another website project.

Technical readiness became the entry fee, not the advantage. When five leaders in a sector pass the same tests, it stops separating anyone. It stays mandatory, because whoever fails is out before starting.

The comparison will exist with or without you. Someone already writes the list of best brands in your sector, and today it is usually whoever sells several of them. Nobody in that position has any interest in making you stand out.

A small brand is not at a disadvantage here. In our data, the most specific slices were exactly the ones that brought smaller brands onto page one. What decides is not the media budget.

How to find out where your brand stands

If your site is already in order and the brand is still out of the answers, a technical audit will find nothing, because that is not where the problem is.

The starting point is seeing what AI answers today when someone asks about your category, and how much of that space is yours. The first check is free and takes under a minute.

Frequently asked questions

If my site already passes the tests, what is missing?
Content that answers a buying question. Passing means a machine can read the site; it does not mean the text works as an answer. Different things, and the footwear measurement shows both happening at once.
So technical readiness does not matter?
It matters and it is mandatory. Whoever fails is out before starting. What the measurement shows is that it stopped being a differentiator in the sectors where everyone has already solved it.
I manufacture and retailers sell. Is this my problem?
The retailer sells today and the brand is remembered tomorrow. In the measurement, it is the retailer on page one under its own name with your product inside. If the customer leaves with the shop’s name, every sale builds somebody else’s brand.
